Qualifications:
High School Diploma and CDA Credentials (or willing to obtain a CDA credential with the support of Head Start)
Experience working with groups of children ages 3 - 4
Patience and flexibility; good human relations and communications skills
Ability to take initiative in recognizing an immediate need and meeting it without specific instructions
Ability to record data and verbally describe student progress and difficulties
Ability to accept and adapt to the wide differences in student characteristics and abilities
Willingness to receive training in the HighScope and Second Step curricula and Conscious Discipline philosophy
Willingness to maintain CPR and First Aid certifications and comply with Head Start requirements for a physical examination and TB test
Bi-lingual preferred but not required
Performs related work as required
Job Description:
The Head Start Teacher Assistant provides instructional support in the daily management of Head Start classroom. An employee in this class is responsible for assisting the teacher by:
Perform instructional and clerical duties including preparing classroom materials, lesson plans and the environment, supervising student behavior, learning and applying specific behavior management techniques, and administering literacy assessments
Prepare for and teach the Second Step Curriculum on a weekly basis to the class
Provide assistance with personal hygiene, and physical needs of children as required
Provide individual and group instruction; teaching and assisting students at work time; monitoring work areas including preparing the materials and cleaning up
Write observations on students and participate in home visits for each child
Participate in family style meals in the classroom
